Cat Seat Safety Tips For Kids

Ensuring the safety of their kids is a primary reponsibility of all parents. While on the road, they should know the proper place where to put their children to avoid head-on crashes during an accident. According to experts, the back seat usually is safer than the front. For children ages 7-8, they must use booster seats with lap/shoulder belts for best protection. There should also be be one belt for each person. Buckling two people, even kids, into one belt could injure both. Each child safety seat needs a safety belt to hold it in place.

In case of infants, they must be seated in a location facing the rear of the car. In this position, the safety seat cushions the head and back. Remember not to hold a child on your lap because you could crush him during an impact or collision. Even if you are using a safety belt, the child would be torn from your arms in a crash. Don’t put a seatbelt around yourself and a child on your lap. Again, two people with one belt around them could injure each other!

So how old should a child be to ride in the vehicle without a car seat?

A child must be altleast 8 years old and 80 pounds. This is a good guidelines but many kids don't fit into those criteria very well. Sometimes, age doesn't matter because kids have different weight and height even if they have the same age. To make things clearer, here are five questions you should ask yourself to know if your child is ready to be buckled with a seat belt only:

  • Does your kid sit all the way back against the car seat?
  • Do your child's knees bend comfortably at the edge of the auto seat?
  • Is the shoulder belt centered on the shoulder and chest?
  • Is the lap belt touching the top of the thighs, not the tummy?
  • Does your kid have the ability to sit in this position the whole trip?
